My mom has two and a half acres of land in Jamaica. It was left to her and my aunt in a will. Can my mom sell her half of the land? how much would she get for it?My mom and aunt actually owns more land ( about 7 to 10 acres) but other people, over the years of my mom ignoring the land, have moved onto it. what can she do about that? she wants to just claim her half of the two acres and be done with it because she does not want to put people off her property, but shouldn't they be paying my mom somehow for living on her property?thank you.

The best thing to do would be to check the laws in Jamaica. Is there a deed and are both their names on it? Squaters, huh? Again, check the laws. Here in Illinois, adverse possession occures after 20 years of occupation. A person has to occupy or use a piece of land, they don't actually own, day in and day out, without fail(this doesn't include rentals or leases because contracts actually state the occupancy and duration terms), for 20 before laying claim to it. The people who have moved onto your mom's land might actually be considered the owners of those particular pieces now.....
