I have a B.A. degree in another field. I would like to know how would I go about starting the process on getting a real estate license. I have no experience in the field, and I have not taken a single class about it. So I am starting at step one. I would really be interested in getting information from people who have already obtained this. Are there some classes I need to take at a community college ? Should I find a website where I can study information online from ? How hard is the test, what are the difficult aspects I need to study the most ? If you took the test, did you pass it the first time ? How many times can you take it ? How long did you study for it ? What do I do after I pass the test ? Would it help to intern for a real estate company, while I am studying for the test ? And finally, after I get my license, what other certificates in this field should I go after ? Thank you in advance. All answers, and suggestions are appreciated.I would want to get a license for selling residential homes, in California.

The requirements are set by each state, just as many of the laws concerning real estate transactions differ from state to state. If by some bizarre fluke coincidence you happen to be in WA, OR, CA or ID, then I can certainly help you...otherwise I'm afraid I have no idea.

Do you want to sell houses (residential) or businesses (commercial)? Figure out what you want to sell, and then call two or three of the top companies in town, ask to speak to the broker in charge, team leader, or agent manager, and ask for an appointment to chat with them about entering the field. Most are eager to encourage newbies. They will be able to recommend the best classes in your area (around here, you can take a course either on-line or in person), help you study for your real estate exam, and possibly help you starting out. You can also call your local Board of Realtors and ask for information -- almost all of the Boards offer the required licensing class. Most folks, once they pass the test, interview with several companies, unless they had a company that paid for their training up front. The test is not too hard -- just pay attention in class, and you should have no trouble. I only know one person who didn't pass it the first time, and they freely admitted that they did not do their required reading outside of class. Once you are hired with a company, the good companies will provide training to get you up to speed -- after all, if you don't make money, they don't make money. Interning with a real estate company might not be a bad idea if you have the time -- lots of real estate teams (smaller companies within big offices) and larger offices hire assistants to help them with listings, marketing, etc., and many assistants go on to earn their license. Once you have your license, you can think about going for various specialties, depending on your market and your interests, or even going for your Realtor license.
