you can use fiber glass joint tape and joint compound,or you can fill the voids with regular dry wall tape untill hole is filled then trowel finish over top.

cut the drywall out so you have rectangles/squares and then cut pieces of new drywall to fit. if you are across studs, screw the new pieces in. otherwise you will have to support them somehow. that depends on size of hole (how big?).at some point it may make sense to rip out the old sheetrock and redo it, or buy new sheets of the thin kind of rock and just re rock over the old rock.tape and joint compound next, sand, paint.

Call you local expert and have this done right the first time so you do not have to keep spending money trying to fix it yourself, or go to Home Depot and take a free class on wall repair.Keep americans working....Don

If the holes are big and bad enough, I would consider cutting out a section of the drywall and replace with new. If you choose this route, cut the replacement piece first and then trace around that piece to cut out the old. Screw in furing strips behind the wall, and then screw the new piece into the furing strips. Then, tape, mud, sand, and paint!

Trade Info has good advice, if you want to do it yourself. It is a good idea to span the backside of the opening with two or more wooden pieces. Scrure them from the front with drywall screws. That will give you something to place your patch piece agaist. Then secure the patch peice with screws, and proceed to finish it with patching cement and sanding.
