I'm renting a house, where the previous tenants PAINTED the kitchen counters w/ a high gloss enamel paint. To make matters worse, it's baby poo brown. I've considered laminate, but would like some more ideas.Update: I have my landlord's permission to do the laminate, I was just hoping for more finishing ideas. It's that formica (50s era) stuff underneath I belive. I used Fleckstone (sray on stuff) on a bathroom counter once. It worked great, but don't think it would withstand kitchen abuse. Tell me more about the roll stuff?

it depends what is underneath. I would use turpentine to remove the paint, but then you run the risk of damaging the counter underneath. You can try a steamer to see if you can get the paint to bubble and then chip it off. or sand it off or ripe up the counter, then put down laminated wood as you described.I would just charge them for the damages and replace the counter though if they did not get permission to make the repair.

First thing that would recomend is talk to your landlord and show/explain to him/her on what you would like to do.Because maybe the landlord approved the change for the previous renters.Usually if you approach the landlord first, they usually pay for it all or split the cost or take it off your next month's rent.If they don't bring up about rent reduction, then you suggest it.It is always best to discuss ANY changes or modifications to the home or property with the landlord first.

there are several options you can do stripping the counter is one but you risk loosing some of the strenght of to wood you can scrape it but that is time consuming the easiest way i know would be go to lowes or a hard ware store and get a rool of thick paper like wallpaper but it is for counter tops or you can do laminate or paint it again but be sure to prime it first

There is paint for kitchen counters. Melamine or something. Wouldn't want it in my house, but it can be done. I would call a paint store like Sherwin Williams for better info on this. Bet you would have to remove the enamel first. Home Depot and Lowes sells those pre-fabricated counter tops in lengths up to 12'. They are really easy and look good. Would need tools and a little skill.
