How often is a mortgage or debt consolidation service actually a scam?

Is it common to make mortgage application on the phone? Is it a good idea?
How about making an online application? Do people easily give out SSN and all other private info?

Are there mortgage services in most cities, say with population over 20.000?

Do local mortgage businesses or their agents usually serve a city or a county or state/province.

Is it legal to offer listings for mortgage services? Never seen such a thing.

Couldn't tell you don't know the facts. I think most mortgage and debt consolidation services are legit. The problem with debt consolidation services are they all take different approaches so there are a lot of misunderstandings.

Is it common to make mortgage application on the phone?

Yes it is very common.

Is it a good idea?

Yes. It's a big timesaver for anyone.

How about making an online application?

Also a good idea. Very efficient. Just make sure it's not a scam site.

Do people easily give out SSN and all other private info?

If they trust you, they will give you anything you ask for.

Mortgage services are available pretty much anywhere you can stick an office or bank.

Do local mortgage businesses or their agents usually serve a city or a county or state/province.

It depends on the company they work for. A lot of times a mortgage company focuses on one state, but it's not uncommon for mortgage companies to be able to provide mortgages nationwide.

I don't exactly understand this question. Are you asking if the mortgage company will work for free if you give them a listing?

Making an online application would be a helpful idea. Or even the mortgage offices are available all over, you can have a visit and know all the details.
